Description

This is the build order that Polt used to defeat Dayshi in game 2 on Lerilak Crest at IEM Katowice 2016 - Ro16. Dayshi also opened with a gas first build, but Polt used the defender's advantage to gain an early lead by thwarting Dayshi's initial rush. This build is strong against a Reaper FE and crushes a Gasless Fast Expand.

Analysis

Use early gas to tech quickly to starport. Instead of using 2 depots and a barracks to wall, use 3 depots. You can harass with your initial reaper, but it is imperative that you do not lose it. If your opponent fast expands use your hellions to kill as many SCVs as possible until enemy reinforces. If your opponent goes gas first you can decide whether to build the viking before your first banshee. Once you have your first tank and banshee with cloak researched you can push out with all your hellions and about 6 marines. Take your natural expansion behind this. If your opponent gasless-fast- expanded you can usually end the game with this push, otherwise you want to deal as much damage to SCVs, supply depots and add-ons while taking your 2nd base and adding more production based on your follow up into late game. Lastly, you should snipe opponent's siege tanks with cloaked banshees.

Hey, StoicLoofah. I'm only Gold ranked on SC2 ladder so my input is not going to be as valuable as, say a GrandMaster, but I will say that this build is a rather standard build in TvT. Probably the second most standard after Reaper FE. Korean pro Terrans like TY and Cure use a variant of this build for which there is a build listed here called "TY's 1/1/1 Cloak Banshee" posted by Rayvenx. To answer your question, you could theoretically always use this build, and only use a different build once you suspect your opponent expects you to open with cloaked banshees. That way you become a little unpredictable.

Thanks for sharing this build! Quick question, though: you say that this build is intended to work against a fast expand, but it also handles the early rush from dayshi. So when would you not recommend using this build?
